Segment 1: Physical Abuse of
Elderly in Nursing Homes.
They are about the last places anyone wants to be, but about 1.6 million people now live in nursing homes in the United States. Thirty years from now, it's expected to be 5 million. Many patients are at risk because one out of four nursing homes every year is cited for causing death or serious injury to a resident, according to government figures. |

Segment 2: What's Not Done at
Nursing Homes/Neglect?
Neglect is the silent killer in nursing homes. By some estimates, malnutrition, dehydration, bedsores and infection - caused by neglect - account for half of nursing home deaths and injuries. |

Segment 3: What is the
Government Doing?
A CBS News analysis of the federal government's nursing home inspection database finds more than 1,000 homes were cited last year for hiring staff with a history of abuse. Federal regulators admit, however, that the statistics conceal how bad things really are inside America's nursing home. State inspections are often unreliable, and most problems in nursing homes go unreported. That's especially true when it comes to cases of physical abuse. |
Throughout its existence, the Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans. Often, the Committee will submit its findings and recommendations for legislation to the Senate. In addition, the Committee publishes materials of assistance to those interested in public policies which relate to the elderly. In this regard, Paul Hodge, Founding Director of the Global Generations Policy Institute gave extensive testimony regarding elder abuse.
